While America celebrated their independence, we were up in Calgary, Canada where the Calgary Stampede had taken over town. Masses of people dressed in Western Wear walked by the venue…. they looked like an army of 1980’s The Alarm fans with cowboy hats instead of big hair!!! I feel compelled to check with the venue that they have booked ‘Big Country‘ – Scottish rock band with a Celtic flavor, as defined by the ‘bagpipe’ guitar sound and not the BIG ‘Country and Western band . I was slightly concerned that the audience would start line dancing when we played ‘Fields of Fire‘ tonight. The venue manager assured me that he had booked the right band and was expecting a big crowd of fans for the show. Phew!!!
I went for a run through the town and I was the only person in Nike… the rest were in Scully’s and Tony Lama…. it was weird, but cool all the same. Mark Brzezicki and I went down to the old Stampede corral and marveled in the sites.
It was a great event– packed with cowboys, cowgirls, line dancers and also a massive ideal home western style convention…. we emerged having had demonstrations in yoga mats, massage chairs and all sorts of innovations that have nothing to do with the cowboy lifestyle whatsoever…
The gig was a bit of a stormer too…
