Helena – July 06

Mark Brzezicki happened across a news article on the Hotel reception TV while we were checking in about some natural hot springs near to where we were. Not ones to hang about, we were soon in a car heading for Boulder, Montana which is half way between Helena and Butte. Our destination is a place called Boulder Springs Hotel which has a totally natural spar of boiling hot springs. It’s a trip back in time as we pull into the kind of hotel you see in Cowboy films and very old by American standards.
Mike Peters - Boulder, Montana
We get a little history lesson from the lady on reception. Apparently we are in Peace Valley a place so special to the native indians that no fighting ever took place here when the Indian Wars were being fought between the indigenous population and the new europeans as represented by the US cavalry. Everyone observed the spiritual significance of this valley and it certainly is peaceful.
Mike Peters - Peace Valley
Mark and I enter the pool and it’s beautifully hot with water so thick with healing properties that it is hard to run your hands through the density of the liquid.

It is so relaxing especially with the knowledge that this water has been heated by the fires of the Earth’s core. Time becomes invisible here too and before we can even get to the steam room and freezing shower to further reinvigorate our tired bodies, it’s time for us to head back to civilisation and the rigours of the tour bus. It was a beautiful day.

Edmonton – July 05

Had a walk into town with Mark Brzezicki and stopped for a cup of tea at the legendary Tim Horton’s.

It was a day for trying to get on the internet and write up the last few blogs.
The best place to get on line was in the dressing room and I got to spend some time with my guitar and came up with some new songs and ideas while playing. I always enjoy writing in the dressing room as there is always a sense of something happening especially with the clock counting down to showtime.

In between chords, writing and blogging, I finally got to send a letter to a lady doctor in Israel that I have been reading about since coming across this article on the internet.
Dr. Amal Bishara is an an Israeli Arab woman who runs donor drives in Israel with a very small team of dedicated people. I am trying to come up with a way in which Love Hope Strength can engage with her and maybe make it the focus of our next ‘Rocks’ event. I hit the send button and hope that all my research and tracking on the internet to find email addresses find their home. Fingers crossed.

Calgary – July 04

While America celebrated their independence, we were up in Calgary, Canada where the Calgary Stampede had taken over town. Masses of people dressed in Western Wear walked by the venue…. they looked like an army of 1980’s The Alarm fans with cowboy hats instead of big hair!!! I feel compelled to check with the venue that they have booked ‘Big Country‘ – Scottish rock band with a Celtic flavor, as defined by the ‘bagpipe’ guitar sound and not the BIG ‘Country and Western band . I was slightly concerned that the audience would start line dancing when we played ‘Fields of Fire‘ tonight. The venue manager assured me that he had booked the right band and was expecting a big crowd of fans for the show. Phew!!!
I went for a run through the town and I was the only person in Nike… the rest were in Scully’s and Tony Lama…. it was weird, but cool all the same. Mark Brzezicki and I went down to the old Stampede corral and marveled in the sites.
Mike Peters - Calgary Stampede
It was a great event– packed with cowboys, cowgirls, line dancers and also a massive ideal home western style convention…. we emerged having had demonstrations in yoga mats, massage chairs and all sorts of innovations that have nothing to do with the cowboy lifestyle whatsoever…

The gig was a bit of a stormer too…

Kamloops – July 03

We drove over night to Kamloops, and I spent most of the day sorting out my territory as established on the tour bus. A month is a long time to be away from home and you accumulate all kinds of stuff in that time. I have to re-shuffle my space and possessions contained therein. I took a trip to the launderette to clean all my clothes, and it feels good to be organized. I’ll keep it simple today, then Mark Brzezicki and I took a stroll through the town. We enjoyed a nice dinner Al Fresco while watching the world go by.

Vancouver – July 02

We are crossing into Canada.

It’s actually very friendly and pleasant. We had to let the border guards go through our tour bus, but again it’s all smiles and “Welcome To Canada”. We are in a venue called The Venue in Vancouver tonight, and because Canada is so together as a nation and actually sends donor registration forms out to every household there is no real need for Love Hope Strength ‘GET ON THE LIST’. It was a great room to play for. The manager, Destry, is a huge Alarm fan and saw us play with Pat Benatar in 1986. It’s a bit strange just playing a straight gig and not having to do the donor booth and the Love Hope Strength address before the show. It makes me realize how much a part of my rock and roll life ‘Love Hope Strength‘ is now. It’s almost like being on stage without a guitar.

I was in the dressing room before the show, and I started to get to grips with a new song that might just be the beginning of a new record for Mike Peters. It’s got something about it…. no title yet, but some words and a feeling to do something different…… we shall see…..

I like Canada as a country, and Vancouver as a city. Meet some great people after the show who have waited a long time to see Big Country and a lot of people who want to see The Alarm in Canada. All is good in the Great White North.

Eureka – June 30

I’m not really sure where we are today. I woke up on the tour bus at a surprise destination organised by Jan our tour manager. It’s a campsite in the middle of the redwood forest near Eureka apparently. There’s not a lot to do here, so that’s exactly what I aim to do. I got to catch up on my blog writing and tried to get on the internet, but it was not really working.

I had a good chat with James Chippendale on the phone, but I had to walk for about a quarter of a mile to find a signal. I had to do a radio station interview at 10:58 precisely in the evening live on air. I walked out under the night sky to talk about The Alarm, Big Country and Love Hope Strength. It’s all good but I had no idea where the radio station is… somewhere in LA, apparently. It was cool though and luckily the guys were very informed. I sat by the campfire for the rest of the evening and wondered where my little boys were at that moment in time… probably just about to wake up and head for school.

Beautiful night sky full of stars….

Napa – June 29

I got a text message from Nigel Phillips (Nigel twist to you old school Alarm fans), he was coming to the show tonight and needed a pass for the guest list. I texted him back and asked if he wanted to jump up for a song with us? I spent most of today editing a Big Country video which premieres on July 4th. It was shot at Baby Rock in Arizona, which is close to the four corners region. We made the film ourselves by using a combination of iPhone, Cameras and Go Pro’s. It looks pretty good, if I say so myself.

Location, location, location is what makes it though. We have been putting together a self-produced documentary about Big Country’s Journey tour in North America, and I’m sure the fans will enjoy it when it comes into the public domain.

IN A BROKEN PROMISE LAND - BIG COUNTRY

Napa is a beautiful little town, lots of antiques and laid back atmosphere. The Uptown Theatre staff are so friendly and accommodating bringing us ice and drinks for the tour bus. We are playing with Berlin tonight (yes…. ‘You take my breath away’ Berlin), and because they have a female lead singer who needs a separate dressing room, we elect to use the tour bus rather than all cram into one room with the guys from Berlin. As nice as they we don’t think they will quite get the accents and kilts that go into a Big Country pre-show vibe. As usual, I run out onto the stage to announce the presence of the Love Hope Strength booth in the ‘Courtyard Cafe’. The venue is full which is a good sign. It’s a seated audience tonight and a beautiful room. My phone goes with another text alert. It’s from Nigel saying he can’t make it after all as his ride has dropped out. Never mind… maybe next time.
Back on the bus we are all dressed and ready to go. The five-minute call comes through and we step onto the side-walk…. Bruce Watson says the front of the venue is as cool as the inside and so we decide to get a photo of us at the front of the gig (much to the bemusement of the fans who are pulling in at this last-minute), “let’s go on stage through the auditorium” shouts one bright spark and so as the intro tape plays ‘Flower of Scotland”, Big Country walk down the aisles to the stage. What a fantastic gig it was tonight. A standing ovation and an amazing atmosphere generated.
Big Country - Uptown Theatre, Napa, Califormia
No time to bask in the glory for me though, its combat jacket on and out to the LHS booth (which is being manned by KC and Brian from Marmot). The booth is running at full capacity tonight as cheeks are swabbed, forms are filled and people registered to THE LIST. By the time Berlin hit the stage it’s all over and time to pack everything away.
Get On The List - Napa - Big Country
After the show we attend a venue organised meet and greet for some of the patrons of the Theatre and we meet Terri Nunn and her band who are all gracious and friendly people. I get to meet Richard Hawkins (from Wales now resident in the US), who is the sound engineer for Berlin and also Gene Loves Jezebel who I toured with in 1999 on the ‘Resurrection’ tour along with the Mission UK. You can’t go anywhere these days……
